The Higher Education And Theory (HEAT) network was established in October 2013 under the auspices of the University of Westminster’s Higher Education and Research Centre, as a cross-faculty network for staff and research students interested in reading, researching and writing on the theory of education. Our intention is to foster an increased awareness of the contributions of major critical thinkers to pedagogic debate and practice, supplementing the largely sociological, psychological and empirical focus of current educational discourse with a broader transdisciplinary emphasis on (philosophical, political, historical, legal, literary and cultural…) theory. We hope that a productive critical perspective will be opened up on contemporary pedagogical practice through such viewpoints, one that will also allow researchers to make connections between their research and their own practice as teachers by re-reading theoretical texts pedagogically.
This year we will be organizing reading groups, research labs and a symposium on education, details of which are given below. Our events are open to all staff and research students and we encourage and warmly welcome new members.
Symposium on Educational Eliminationism and Cultural Colonization

Our reading group meets once a semester to discuss a text chosen by the group as significant for discussion of contemporary pedagogy and education, with members taking it in turns to introduce the text. Last year, we read Lyotard’s The Postmodern Condition, Arendt’s ‘The Crisis in Education’ and Bernstein’s ‘Social Class and Pedagogic Practice’ (blogs and reports from last year’s reading group are available on the HEAT website here).
This year we will be reading Blacker’s The Falling Rate of Learning (with a special Q&A session with the author), Marcuse’s ‘Some Social Implications of Modern Technology’ and Sedgwick’s ‘Pedagogy of Buddhism’. Please note our first reading group this year will take place on Tuesday 11th November (Week 8) and will be a special Q&A session with the author.
This year we will also be organizing a Research Lab, where those of the group who are interested in conducting their own research and writing on theories of pedagogy and higher education will have the opportunity to experiment with, share, present and discuss their ideas and writing in an informal and collaborative setting. Please note our first Research Lab will take place on Wednesday 3rd December (Week 11).
